So... what happened? Well, digital transformation happened. In 2015, the average company used 8 SaaS applications. By 2020, that number grew 10x to 80.

How did that happen? There's a critical mass where a company moves enough core technology to new platforms that the dreaded intranet ceases to be a one-stop shop for anyone. This results in an exponential acceleration in the adoption of SaaS point solutions and all the underlying platforms that unify and support them.

But really, how did that happen? Wasn't IT stretched dangerously thin in 2015? How in the world did they buy and on-board 72 new SaaS applications in 5 years? The surprising answer is that they didn't. 67% of software purchases occur outside IT.

Our new reality is buyers with no experience buying software in the most complex and interdependent software environment in tech history. In order to be technological enablers, CIOs have to become great buying coaches, and that requires a complete and scalable software evaluation and implementation process.

How is it going? There have been growing pains. 77% of buyers say their last purchase was extremely painful. 87% of projects with buyer/seller agreement fail to successfully implement.

The role, scale, and impact of the CIO has changed. Digital transformation is reality. Now, our buying strategy has to reflect it.
